Well, it was late afternoon, but I needed a post for the letter E. π
This is my attempt at sketching our little river birch tree last Memorial weekend. It was one of those perfect afternoons, and painting outside is just so zen. From my little art journal.
I love trees so much, and can’t really remember a time when I didn’t. This is just another in a long list of subjects I’d really love to be able to render well in watercolor (or any medium) one day. There’s just something about a tree…..they have so much to teach us. I think this can be said of so many elements of nature. The sea is another. We are mesmerized by it, and I believe that’s no accident.
Happy Sunday to you and yours. Hold somebody close today. We could all use some more of that. Peace.
Oh Laura! This is quite fabulous! Love how the leaves of the tree turned out! You really aced this one! (PS Hope you got your organizing done… It is on my list of “to dos” but I never feel like doing it…. Always something more fun! π

Thanks, Jodi! Nope, didn’t get done. The lack of sleep or maybe a bug(?) caught up to me, I hit a wall and had to sleep for several hours. Just ran outta steam. It has to be done though because I don’t have a working surface down there. Or I’d be putting it off too! π

Serenity Laura, I especially like the dimension in the leaves. Watercolor adds such surprises when it dries. Enjoy your day!

I find trees soo difficult but I don’t really know why – very frustrating! You did a great job here π

Thanks, Nicola. I’m a great admirer of your work, so this means a lot. I love trees too much to abandon them. I find them tough too. Thanks again.

Spectacular! We just planted some River Birches and they are really distinctive.I love how you captured the leaves. And the sky behind sets it off. Really nice.

I love how you painted this Laura! I find this painting (in your sketchbook!) to be so calming. I think this one could be framed! So pretty. Hope you get feeling better! β€οΈ

Thank you, Jill. I felt so calm when I painted it, I could’ve almost fallen asleep! :))). It was a perfect day and the painting will always be a great memory of it. I think an art journal may be even better than a written journal to remember that moment, that time. Have you found that?

Beautiful :-). The colours are lovely and calming. And I like the subtle ink strokes.

Thank you! I got that too from a youtube if Cathy Johnson’s. She keeps her old micron pens when she wants just a bit of ink. I was about to throw that one away, but it was perfect for this painting.

Good tip! π (unintended pun). I like the gentle effect for the gentle birch.

Thank you! I was pretty happy with it. There’s always room to improve, but that’s one of the nicer pages in my art journal so far.

Lovely! You might be interested in a book called “Drawing Nature” by Stanley Maltzman. It doesn’t cover painting, of course, but he has some really great trees drawings in there.

The loose quality really captures the movement; I can see the leaves in the wind. And I love the way you did the trunk and branches too. Yes, trees are wonderful!
