Quick Flight

While doing something else the other night, the images of a couple of birds popped in my head, so I grabbed something and sketched them quickly.

0710 sketch

And I decided to bring this idea into a painting last night. Here’s the first layer of the first attempt:

0710 bird 1 stage 1

And then I think I might have added too much detail in the second (final) layer, not sure.   Felt like I lost some of the transparency that seemed fitting to the subject:

0710 bird 1 final

So I gave it another try with basically only one layer, just adding a teeny bit of definition in layer two. This is the final of that second painting:

0710 bird 2

I feel the wings in the first painting have more transparency and freedom inside them.  But I may try this again and see what happens!    I’m thinking maybe Inktense next time out.   Fly, be free, birdies, it’s Friday! Oh, we shall twist and shout like we mean it! πŸ˜€

  1. beautiful Laura! they are such expressions of you! I feel I get to know you better and better with each work of art, and it is a beautiful discovery of a beautiful person. The colors and the movement and the freedom represented warm my heart and soul. πŸ™‚

  2. hi Laura – love the colour combination! So Beautiful – the greens with the purple look marvellous and so fresh. Alive! the top sketch of the bird was quite good with lots of energy action and movement, great job! πŸ™‚ you’d asked about my skies- the top one was cobalt. the other was cerulean with lots of white in it! For some reason my WP sent your comment to the other section spam.. as there were “More than 2 addresses in the comment” apparently…. so I just now saw it in that other section! not sure why sometimes you have just the one address then two? why would WP do that?

    1. Thanks, Debi. I’m so glad you like them!

You know, sometimes I have trouble with WP blasting my comments. I do login via the phone, ipad and PC, and haven’t pinned it down to any specific device…..not sure what’s up with that address issue, but thanks for alerting me to it.

  3. They are beautiful, Laura!!! I came to the conclusion today that I like watercolor the best with only one layer. I think thatΒ΄s the only way to get this light and transparent “watercolor feeling” I love so much about them. ThatΒ΄s why I love the first version of your first watercolor bird here the most. But – of course – itΒ΄s a question of taste… The colors are great in all of them, love the purple/blue and turquoise/green combination!

      1. Absolutely!!! HeΒ΄s my watercolor hero! IΒ΄m still thankfull that I found out about his style of working (through you πŸ’) – I think my watercolor painting has improved a lot since then (and itΒ΄s only been a couple of days…).
