Draw a Bird Day February (#41): 100 Face Challenge

Happy Draw a Bird Day! Jill of Jill’s Art Journal inspired me to make this when she remarked on my recent whimsical circles painting that it made her think of peacock feathers. Great idea, Jill!   Gave me an excuse to break out those Neocolor II pastels once again.   (Like I need an excuse!)

I decided to draw this in ink with a very fine Copic 0.1mm pen and then highlight the circular feathers and the eye only in color. Hope you enjoy.

Have a terrific week!  Please visit Kerfe and Nina over at Method Two Madness for more bird art, and a compilation with links to all of the artwork in a few days! Peace.

    1. Hi Charlie, thanks! I’m up to #41! I keep count in the title of each post, or else I’d lose all track. I’m thinking about running this to 365, because I’m enjoying the faces so much (and I’m almost halfway through in February….whaaaaaaaaaaa? Didn’t expect this!) Those Neocolors are seriously worth a buy. The color is so creamy when wet and honestly, great texture when dry, so win win! Glad you enjoyed it!

  1. I’m a little “late to the game” this morning, but oh how I love your peacock and the way you did it! Just the right amount of pop to certain feathers that match the eye! BRAVO – such artistic sense!

    1. Jodi, thank you! I really think working at this daily does help, because I really feel that sense is developing. This was always something to think about (and kinda give up on because I really didn’t know) but now it’s more instinctive and I think it just comes from doing it. Like everything else! Glad you like it! 😀

    1. YES! (Did you hear that, world?) If the only thing this painting did is to produce that comment from you, dear Sharon, it was 1000% worthwhile. You will rock them! I didn’t get them for awhile either, but that’s because I was familiar with the Portfolio brand of the same thing (not nearly as nice, although it was my first choice due to the price). Colors are nice in both but the difference IMO in the Neos is worth paying for. Creamy and buttery and VIBRANT and the best part is that you can choose to let the original line show or not, depending upon what you do with the brush. I love that! I’ll be dying to see what you do with these. Really excited! ❤

    1. Yes, I do, Jennifer. Mainly because I can’t erase the pen and I am still too prone to be a little heavy handed. That pen is the finest I’ve found, other than another one made by the same company that is even finer than 0.1 mm. If you think about it, that is really fine! And the nice thing, you can refill these. My other pens that are wider by Micron and Pitt – I like them all but they run out much too quickly and they’re not a whole lot cheaper than the refillable Copic pens. Just my .02. I’m really glad you liked this!

  2. WOWZA! You did a mixed media piece! LoVe it Laura! 💜👍🎨 YOU ROCK!!! 🌟🌟🌟 Really like how you didn’t color all of it – gives me a sense of wonder. And coloring in the peacock’s eye was brilliant! Thank you for mentioning my blog too, you are so sweet Laura! 😍🌈

    1. I’m so glad you liked it Jill! I was dying to see what you’d think! I really had intended it to be more of a collage type mixed media work, but decided to go with this as it the pen drawing turned out ok. Then Hub gave me the tip about the eye and I thought it would be a nice tie-in to the eye feathers. I’m so glad you saw this in my circles, or I’d have never thought to do it! Thank you, my friend! 💜💜💜

        1. Sure, I really enjoy combining different mediums (always love using more art supplies lol)! I’d like to explore though and do some of the stuff you do so beautifully, like the Gelli printing (which I haven’t tried yet) and working that kind of depth into my artwork. I think that’d be cool. I love the effects you get! And the YouTube art journal videos are so inspirational too. You ever watch those?

              1. Thanks Laura! I think you are good at mixed media too – there are lots of variations! ❤️ I will make a note to check out her videos when I’m not enrolled in so many online classes. I start a new one tomorrow on trees! 🌲💕🌳
