My first experiment with Claybord……and I’m undecided at this point about this one. This is a 5×7″ acrylic. Vicki Hutchins reviewed it here, and I love everything Vicki does, so of course, I bought some too!
I’d love to know what you think about Claybord. I love Aquabord and Gessobord, all created by Ampersand. (Note: I may receive a portion of your purchase from these links to help support my site.) Not sure how I feel about this one, but I’d love to get your thoughts. It is a very slick surface. So I guess I expected a different result? I don’t know. Maybe I was having an off day with the brushes.
I’d also love to know what, if anything, you see in this painting. It’s a pretty fun kind of mind trip for me, hearing everything I didn’t paint, lol. For this one, I had something in my mind and I was painting abstractly, randomly (or so I thought). Then I turned the painting to the side when I was ready to put my brush down, and there it was…..what was on my mind while painting. Strange, huh? *cue the Twilight Zone theme*
Happy Almost Friday, good people! Peace and paint puddles to all.
Absolutely beautiful!

I love this so much! your twilight moment was dancing with your right side of your brain because it has so much feeling and strengths…..the only thing though is there is that little black shape that I can’t quite see it as part of the painting. Maybe it is my eyes…..Love this painting! interesting how you are not sure how you feel about it. I have had a few off days and I am thinking that I need a break for some fresh eyes and attitude. 🙂

Wow, thanks Margaret! I actually added that black at the end, once I turned it (now) right side up and saw what I was thinking about! So it definitely wasn’t a part of my mind ramble. I’m so glad you love this! Have you ever painted on Claybord? I’m not sold on this surface yet. Not sure if the painting is finished either. Kind of an unsure day it was, lol. I am glad you are taking some time to rest your eyes. How is the yardwork coming along? I hope it’s refreshing you.

It is coming along slowly….waiting on parts for a weedeater and will be setting up watering system…. a lot of work. 🙂

Sounds it. Hey Margaret – I meant to ask – do you see anything in this painting?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I don’t think you mean literally, right? I am one not to see images like some people because that is going against what I think doing an abstract is all about. I am for the deeper meaning…..which I think that you mean. Okay, taking another look, I almost visualize (I don’t see it literally) a deep sea, underneath the surface…..circling or refreshing waters, a seeping down into a movement of water. Ah….that whitish area is peaceful but seeping down (slowly) into a deeper resonance of circling water…..peacefulness and then a deepening clarity! Cool…… I love when I take a closer look and I need prodding to do this because I may not have gotten that the first time around.

Wonderful colors, mix of paint and depth. I’ve used clapbord as a scratch board and colored ink. But that is far as I got. It’s always fun to try new supplies. Beautiful post Laura.

Hi Laura, I see a head and face in the top right corner, flaxen hair, eyes, nose and upturned mouth and a hairy armpit, surrounded by a giant field of Scottish thistle heads. The intense small black hole however adds a sense of astronomical mystery. The blend of colour is amazing.

Woot! That’s what I saw when I turned it from landscape to portrait orientation when I was all finished. It was a little creepy to see what I had really not painted, but what was in my head! A fascinating mind trip these abstracts are. 💜

I see an elephant too! 💕🐘 And a bird in the lower left corner. It also reminds me of Fushias for some reason. Maybe it’s the colors. 😊🌺

Yay, Jill, you saw them both! It was the strangest thing, I painted this landscape with something on my mind……turned it vertical at the end and there it was. Totally unintentional. So I added the eye and the yellow stream……and then I saw the bird in the lower left also. I’m so glad you saw it too! We are birdylicious! You’re the only one who mentioned a bird! 💜💜💜

Sadly we did not win last night, but still two more chances. It just would’ve been nice to win in our home town last night – much hype and a lot of pressure and anticipation as a Pittsburgh team has not won a championship in our hometown in most of our lifetimes – it’s been since the Pirates in 1960 – before I was born – so the town was pretty much nuts in anticipation and it was a bit of a let down, but we go to San Jose now and see if we can clinch it there. If not – it is tied up and then the last game is here and it would be great to win, but will be a nail biter indeed. I can’t wait to get a chance to read the comment. I am quite behind!

No, I was glad to know the background! The Pirates beat the O’s in the World Series in 1979, when I was a very young baseball fan, and I’ve not forgotten, lol. But I guess they must have won the deciding game in Baltimore. Boy, no wonder I’ve never forgot. I would have been 11 and that would’ve been tres depressing lol. I hope it works out for your hockey team! I’ve never watched hockey at all but it seems like it’d be really exciting!

Oh back in the golden days of the Pirates! I remember those days too! I’m not real into hockey, but it is hard not to get caught up in the hype at this stage of the game! 🙂

Just got done reading all the comments which I did not have time to do last night 🙂 – I am so excited to see the bird – it is so obvious now that I look! I just hadn’t taken the time – sorry – last evening to look closely. the elephant – though – no brainer – to me – it popped right off the screen without you even asking what I see – I thought – oh how cool is this abstract – that one little placement of an eye totally made my brain see a complete elephant! Love it!

Thanks, Jodi! Don’t apologize, no worries at all. Really glad you’re excited about your Penguins. Will a penguin painting be far behind?!

Thanks, Charlie! Ok I have to ask – does this appear on your screen in landscape or portrait format? I painted it in landscape but I formatted it to be portrait for the blog. Which is when I saw the elephant too, after I painted this abstract swirly thing and then turned it 90 degrees. I hope the formatting is right on your reader for this. I’m bummed you had to turn it to see the elephant.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Don’t be bummed! It came through as portrait fine, it’s just for some reason j actually saw the elephant more when it was in the orientation you actually painted it! 😉😊Hehe… no idea why when he’s sideways, maybe because it was how you originally painted it. You must be my sis…I was compelled to turn it back to how you saw it! Lol

Yeah, well….I looked at the reader and saw an elephant. Then I read your post and said…huh…so I started looking at the picture from different views to find what you were saying you were seeing in your Subconscience. I gave up and said…Dawn, there is a very clear elephant and another couple of them below so whatever she was trying for, it is an elephant.

Well I can’t comment on clayboard, but it is on my wish list after Vicki’s great review, I’m itching to get some, but also on my list is your fav aqua-board. Both appear to have interesting qualities. Loving the colours Laura, I’m storing that colour combo for the future, he he, brain tagged!

I see the face… and the very first thing I saw was a spider, but that might be Charlie’s fault with his creepy-crawly doodlewash today. I looked at that right before I visited here.

Like I said, I think I had spiders on the brain because I’d just been to Charlie’s doodlewash site. It was the light “fingers” beside the face that immediately made me think of spider legs…if that description makes any sense.

I can’t comment on the boards, as I’ve never used any of them, but generally I like textured surfaces for drawing or painting.
This image looks dreamlike to me, but I can see the elephant too. (K)

Thanks, Kerfe. You wanna stay away from Claybord then. I don’t think it’s for me either. Definitely doesn’t “erase” as well as the others be ampersand, which is a big black mark from my perspective. I expected a different painting experience from such a smooth surface. Easy breezy blends. I tend to agree with you, based on this. I need a more textured surface too. I hope I like the hotpress WC paper I ordered.
