Charley, You’re So Majestic! (#54): 100 Face Challenge

Sometimes a photo of an animal immediately grabs me and I must draw it right away.  Johanna at Colorpencil2014 recently shared a gorgeous photo of her dog and I jumped into it right after dinner last night.

What a stately, gorgeous animal! I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with this beautiful dog and my mixed media art journal last night. Thanks so much for sharing your photos, Johanna! I hope you enjoy!

Happy Weekend to all! I hope you make some time to do something that fills you with joy and satisfaction today. Peace.

Kaiko, Kitty (and Bookworm!) #51: 100 Face Challenge

I found Elisabet’s beautiful cat, Kaiko, one day when I was searching for cats in my WordPress Reader. Her photo really caught my eye, because Kaiko loves to read (and incidentally, so do I)!

022716

I didn’t have time to include the book Kaiko was reading in my sketch, but if you visit Elisabet’s site at ercloudwalker.wordpress.com, you’ll find this dear kitty purrring along with a favorite book! I used to call my kitty with this phrase: “Is it time to read?” Wherever she was in the house, Penny would come running to snuggle and read with mama. There’s nothing like furry love, people, whether you prefer yours barking, meowing, or singing.    It’s all wonderful!

I hope everyone is having a peaceful and rejuvenating weekend. Purrs and wags to all!

Mara, What Lovely EYES You Have (#43): 100 Face Challenge

I recently discovered a fabulous place here at WP called Gold Hearts Blog. There are so many amazing artists and photographers here, and some people are lucky to be called both. Brianna is such a person, and when I saw this photo of her cat, Mara, I just couldn’t resist!

I hope you enjoy. Oh, so struck by her eyes! That 2B graphite pencil is starting to become a favorite! This one was done in my Strathmore mixed media journal.

Are we ready for the Friday/Valentine’s/President’s Day weekend dance?! Are the paints, papers, pigment poised and ready? hehe. *cue the music*

Percilla, Who Can Resist You? (#42): 100 Face Challenge

I found an absolutely irresistible photo of a young kitty named Percilla while browsing the blog of artist Jade Sutton the other day. If you have a minute, check out her blog! Her artwork will inspire you to dig through your supplies and fling pigment to paper, canvas, whatever is closest.   It’s lovely!

I love all animals, but I have to admit being partial to cats. My two passed away within about a year of each other recently, and though we’re not ready to take the plunge yet, I just can’t resist cute little kitty faces. This one was done with a 2B graphite pencil in my most humble Canson sketchbook.

Happy Tuesday!   Enjoy the sun, the snow, the rain…..whatever’s happening where you are.   They all have a purpose, and something to offer us.   Peace.

Shyna, Lovely Kitty (#39): 100 Face Challenge

I was browsing posts tagged “cats” and ran across Diary of Dennis.com, a very cool photography blog, and this photo of Dennis’s cat, Shyna. I was so attracted to the angle of her head in the shot and her beautiful eyes, so of course I had to try to capture her in graphite.

020516Dennis has so many irresistible photos of Shyna on his site that I may be drawn back to her again and again.   It was interesting working with the areas of her fur that are black, as I find black fur most challenging.   I’m working up to it though, so Jill and Denis (and others who have been waiting patiently), I hope to feature your animals soon.   Thank you for sharing terrific photos of your most adorable cat, Dennis!

Peace and pointy pencils to all!   Happy Friday!   😀

Contented Dog (#35): 100 Face Challenge

When I saw this photo of my friend Jodi’s dog at Life in Between…do I have to finish this sentence? How could anyone resist this face?!

Charlie: MM journal, 2B graphite

There is nothing sweeter than the eyes of a dog. A challenging, foreshortened view that I’m still working on rendering just right, but every single time, such a joy to try and capture. Thank you, Jodi, for sharing your lovely photos. And thank you, Charlie, my partner in crime!   You both inspire me.

Saturdays are inspiring too! Beef stew will bubble in the crockpot, some kind of cool gluten-free chocolate chunk bars will be baking in the oven…..and then let the weekend dance continue with color galore! Happy almost February…..peace.

Backyard Bird Nerd Bluebird (#31): 100 Face Challenge

I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been struck by Kathy’s photos at Backyard Bird Nerd. She recently posted a series of bluebird photos that begged to be sketched. If you are interested in birds at all, you owe it to yourself to check out her site.

My Polychromos colored pencils once again helped me out with this little sketch in my Strathmore mixed media art journal. I may just have to make time tonight to sketch the whole bunch! I just love bluebirds, and Kathy captures them from every angle. Sometimes they look so disgruntled, which always makes me laugh. Thanks again, Kathy! You are a huge blessing to us all!

Stay tuned for another famous face tomorrow. Not an American and not a sports figure! Woo hoo! 😀 I just hope I can resurrect it…….we shall see if the portrait gods are with me! Peace.

Cat Saves Man (prelim) -#27 & #28: 100 Face Challenge

I’ve not got far into this book, but I know it’s a keeper.   Here’s the Amazon link – it’s called “A Street Cat Named Bob And How He Saved My Life” by James Bowen.

While watching TV last night, I was sketching faces in front of me the whole time.   (It’s a great way to practice, if you’re into faces.)  Time for bed, and I happened to see this book cover…and I just had to do a quick preliminary sketch, to see if I could capture their essence.   For a quick sketch, I was happy with it.   I’m happier with the man’s face than the cat’s, but I’d like to revisit this image and try and do it some justice.    Don’t they look like a wonderful pair?   Apparently, the man was a heroin addict, and this cat wouldn’t leave him alone.   He wound up turning the man’s life around.   I just love stories like that!

Enjoy your Saturday.   I may be dancing with a ski mask and gloves on today, but I’ll be dancing!   Stay warm and keep those pencils and brushes moving!  🙂

Partial Rabbit (#26): 100 Face Challenge

I found a nice closeup of a rabbit/hare head via a Google images search and had to try to capture it.   This is a simple ballpoint pen with a bit of Polychromos colored pencil on top.

It kind of reminds me of the hares I’ve seen Rebecca over at RebeccaEvansCreate do so many times, but now the photo is gone and I can’t find any more info about him/her.   I just know he was cute and I had to try and draw him.    I was surprised how much I enjoyed working with the ballpoint pen!    A nice inexpensive art supply, I tried it due to a suggestion and related video from Alphonso Dunn (my ink hero).

Let’s all blow really hard and send that snowstorm out to sea.   Who’s with me?   Stay safe and warm, my friends.   ❤
